Biomass represents the successful conversion of waste organic materials such as wood, agricultural waste and selected urban waste to electricity by means of standard boiler technology, advanced fluid bed boiler and other combustion arrangements. National Power has successfully developed biomass projects in Australia and the US which operate by consuming wood, agricultural and urban waste.
In Australia, National Power owns 100% of: Rocky Point, an operating 30 MW wood and urban waste fired cogeneration plant which supplies steam to an adjacent sugar mill; Manjimup, a 45 MW wood-waste fired development utilizing fluid bed boiler technology; and Mirabeena, a 45 MW wood-waste fired development utilizing fluid bed boiler technology. In the U.S., National Power owns a majority interest in Big Valley Power, a 10 MW wood-waste plant with an adjoining sawmill.
Additional biomass projects are in near-term development as National Power continues to grow this important sector of National Power’s asset portfolio.
